A note from our artistic director, Yama poUYE:

This past spring, Spectrum came together as a board and set the tone for the art we wanted to help create this season. We decided to focus on sociopolitical issues that are either so deeply ingrained in how we function that we don’t question them out of convenience, or those that feel so insurmountable that we don’t talk about them for fear of futility. We had no idea of what would come this summer; a wave of anti- Black violence so overwhelming and undeniable that silence became impossible. For some, this was the first time in their lives that they’d interrogated their own complicity in systems that support racism. For others, this summer was nothing new.
Our focus as a board on institutions we allow to thrive without question or protest became even more urgent. However, the need for safe spaces of joy and creation was also apparent. And so this slot was born— an attempt to provide Black and Indigenous artists on campus an outlet for whatever they needed; joy, anger, bitterness, pain, laughter, all of it. There was little direction, this was what each individual wanted it to be. To create art in the face of racism is political. To find community in the face of racism is political. To find joy in the face of racism is political. We thank these artists for sharing their art with us.
